Twisty Toes: Efficient aid stepping

When aid climbing, the ladder should rest in the arch of your foot. Doing so allows you to stand with minimal effort. On low-angle terrain, many people find it challenging to get their feet deep enough in their ladders, standing on their toes and quickly fatiguing their calves.

On your first step, bring the ladder away from the wall and place the rung on your arch. On every subsequent step put your foot in sideways (like a foot jam) then twisting your toes into the wall. This will bring the ladder away from the wall and make space for your next step. This is most helpful on slabs, but can also get you correctly positioned on vertical walls.
